Roger Federer wins Australian Open title

Melbourne, Jan 28 (IBNS):Swiss Tennis master Roger Federer on Sunday clinched the Australian Open by beating Marin Cilic.

 

The Swiss beat his opponent in a five-set marathon encounter.

Federer scripted another memorable victory by beating his opponent  6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 3-6 6-1.

With the victory, Federer became the fourth player after Margaret Court, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf to win 20 or more major singles titles.

“I’m so happy, it’s unbelievable,” Federer told the tournament website.

He said: “I’m happy it’s over, but winning is just an absolute dream come true. The fairy tale continues for me. After the great year I had last year, it’s incredible.”   

The win also made Federer tie the record for men's Australian Open titles at six with Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson.
