New Delhi, Oct 27 (IBNS): Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Friday batted for playing national anthem in cinema halls.

He asked is it too difficult to stand for 52 seconds while the national anthem is being played in cinema halls.

"Standin n waitin outsid a club:20 mins.Standin n waitin outsid favourite restaurant 30 mins.Standin for national anthem: 52 secs. Tough?," Gambhir tweeted.

The Supreme Court recently observed that it is not compulsory for people to stand up in the cinema halls when the national anthem is played to prove their patriotism.

The apex court asked the Centre to consider amending the rules for regulating playing of the national anthem in the theatres ahead of the start of the film.

Supreme Court judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said that one need not stand up to prove his or her patriotism.

Slamming the central government, the Supreme Court said, "Next thing will be that people should not wear t-shirts and shorts to movies because it will amount to disrespect to the National Anthem... where do we stop this moral policing?"

In 2016, the apex court had stated that playing the national anthem in the theatres should be undertaken as a practice to "instil a feeling of committed patriotism and nationalism."
