Virat needs to understand how coaches will also operate: Sourav Ganguly

Mumbai, July 10 (IBNS): As the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) decided to speak to the Indian captain before announcing the name of the coach, former skipper and CAC member Sourav Ganguly said on Monday that Virat Kohli needs to understand how the coaches will also operate.

Ganguly's comment became significant as legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble's resignation as the coach came after his rift with the Indian captain.

The CAC has decided to hold on the announcement of the new coach and talk to important people including captain Kohli.

At a press conference, Ganguly said: "We are not in a hurry. We want to make sure that everybody is in synchronisation of the way forward..."

"We shouldn't be seeing six months down the line doing something differently" he added.

Kumble was appointed as the Indian coach just a year ago and had a great record of not losing any bilateral test or ODI series in his tenure. Indian team even reached the final of the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2017 till they were outplayed by Pakistan.

The post fell vacant after Anil Kumble stepped down as the head coach on June 20 following the rumours regarding his rift with the Indian captain Virat Kohli.

While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as head coach, Kumble decided not to continue.

Issuing a statement on Twitter, Kumble had said: "I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my 'style' and about my continuing as the Head Coach."

The former Indian coach even said he was surprised to hear from BCCI about Kohli's 'reservations', since he believes that he always maintained "respected role boundaries between Captain and Coach".

The CAC, comprising of former cricketers Sachin Tendulakar, Sourav Ganguly ad VVS Laxman, interviewed five candidates on Monday which includes Lalchand Rajput, Virender Sehwag, Richard Pybus, Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody. Phil Simmons could not give the interview today.

Ganguly even informed that the entire selection process is concluded, withholding only the announcement.

The former Indian captain stated the "presentations were outstanding" and nothing different from the ones they have seen the previous year, which prompted them to hold back and talk to important people of the Indian cricket before announcing the name.

Kumble was appointed as the coach over Ravi Sashtri by the Cricket Advisory Committee, last year.

Acknowledging Kohli, Ganguly said it is players who would play on field so it is better to talk to them. "Captain is the most important person in cricket" he added. Ganguly added in saying that Kohli had no inputs in the entire coach selection process.

Earlier when asked about the coach selection, Indian captain said the whole team will give their opinion if at all asked.

The former skipper, taking another CAC member VVS Laxman into confidence, said they would "explain to Kohli the ways coaches want to function in a certain way and make sure everyone is on the same page".

The interview session was held on Monday afternoon which went on for hours. Sachin Tendulkar joined the session via Skype.

The new coach will be selected for next couple of years till 2019 World Cup, the CAC said.

India's tour to Sri Lanka will begin from July 26. Both the teams will play three test matches, five ODIs and one T20.
