Tokyo Paralympics: Indian shooter Avani Lekhara clinches gold

Tokyo: India got their new icon on Monday when shooter Avani Lekhara clinched the gold medal in the  women's 10m Air Rifle Standing (SH1) event at the Tokyo Paralympics on Monday.

Avani won the gold medal by scoring the Paralympics record of 249.6.

The silver medal went to China's Cuiping Zhang while Ukraine's Iryna Shchetnik grabbed bronze.

SAI Media tweeted: "What an amazing performance by @AvaniLekhara as she wins ’s 1st in Para Shooting in 10m AR Standing SH1 Final with a score of 249.6 creating Paralympic Record & equalling the World Record!!!"

Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi greeted her and tweeted: " Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara ! Congratulations on winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold, made possible due to your industrious nature and passion towards shooting. This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavours. "

Apart from Avani, India's discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya won silver medal in the men's F56 event.

He threw 44.38m in the sixth and last attempt to end in the second spot in the event.

Modi wished him and said: "Outstanding performance by Yogesh Kathuniya. Delighted that he brings home the Silver medal. His exemplary success will motivate budding athletes. Congrats to him. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours. #Paralympics."
