US Open: Australian John Millman halts Federer juggernaut

New York City, Sept 4 (IBNS): Tennis superstar Roger Federer has suffered a shock defeat in the US Open after being beaten by Australian John Millman in a five-set game.

The round of 16 game lasted for three hours 35 minutes.

The 37-yer-old Swiss legend lost to his Aussie counterpart 3-6 7-5 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3).

This is the first time that Federer has lost to someone ranked outside of the top 50 at the US Open.

By virtue of the win, Millman, the only unseeded player still left in the ongoing Grandslam, will face former world number one Novak Djokovic.

The 29-year old told reporters following his win that he was in a state of disbelief.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief," said Millman.

"I have so much respect for Roger and everything he's done for the game. He's been a hero of mine."

Federer, ever so calm and composed, however, lost some of his composure during the match, as he was seen complaining about crowd noise.

"It was very hot and one of those nights where I felt I couldn't get air," the 20-time Grandslam champion.

"I just struggled in the conditions and it was one of the first times it has happened to me.

"You just keep sweating and lose energy. At some point I was just happy the match was over," he said.
