New Delhi, Apr 25 (IBNS): With the performance of the team being down in its first six matches of the tournament, Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday stepped down as the skipper of Delhi Daredevils.

He said he made the decision and there was no pressure on him to take the call from Delhi Daredevils management or staff.

"True, that I’ve stepped down from DD captaincy. Just to clarify it was my call, nothing from the management or coaching staff. I may not be leading from the front but I will be the last man standing for @DelhiDaredevils. No individual bigger than d team. Very much a #DilDIlli," Gautam tweeted.

Meanwhile,  Shreyas Iyer has been named the skipper of the side for the remaining of the tournament.

The franchise tweeted: "Dear #DD fans we would like to share @GautamGambhir has chosen to step down as a captain for @DelhiDaredevils a decision taken by him only. We as a franchise salute this courageous call of his, a first in India cricket! A true #dilliwala #Legendary."

Delhi Daredevils further said: "Dear DD fans continuing on our last tweet @GautamGambhir nominated #ShreyasIyer as the next @DelhiDaredevils captain! #VIVOIPL #DilDilli #DilliDhadkega."

Franchise CEO Hemant Dua said Gautam Gambhir's decision to step down as the skipper of the side was 'legendary'.

"Dear All continuing where, I left yesterday this decision by @GautamGambhir to step down as #Captain for betterment of the team is legendary. Only the brave can take call like this! Deserves full respect for this decision a first in #India cricket. #TeambeforeIndividual #Respect," he said.

Delhi has just won one match so far in the tournament.

The team has played six matches.

With just 2 points, Delhi is currently positioned at the bottom of the table.

Gambhir shifted to Delhi side this season after captaining Kolkata Knight Riders for the past few years.

He was one of the most successful skippers in the history of the tournament as under his guidance KKR won the IPL twice.

Gautam's performance as a batsman in the tournament so far has been poor.

In six matches, he has just scored 85 runs.

Gambhir had earlier led Delhi in 2010 edition of the tournament.

Delhi has not won the IPL title in its history so far.
