Kolkata, Oct 30 (IBNS): After successfully hosting the U-17 FIFA World Cup 2017, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed Kolkata has registered the highest attendance at Vivekaanda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in the  tournament.

Banerjee, on a Facebook post, said: "Out of 13 lakh 47 thousand spectators in India who watched the U-17 matches in all the venues, Kolkata is the highest with 6 lakh 8 thousand watching it at the ."

"This is more than 45% of the total spectator count. Next highest is Delhi with 19.78%" the chief minister added.

Banerjee believes such a huge turnout at the football stadium is because of the city's passion for football.

"It is all about our passion for football and the excellent arrangements at the Yuba BVivekananda Yuba Bharati Kriranganharati Krirangan" she said.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup final along with one quarter-final and a semi final were hosted in Kolkata.

Apart from the knock out matches, the group matches were also played in the city.

In a clash between Spain and England in a mega final on Saturday, the English footballers thrashed the Spanish men 5-2, lifting the trophy.

India, being the host nation, had participated in the tournament.

However, the men in blue had lost all their group matches to be knocked out of the tournament.
