New Delhi, July 20 (IBNS): Mourning the loss of hockey legend Mohammad Shahid, who died on Wednesday morning after a prolonged battle with liver problems, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has lost a talented sportsman.

"In the untimely & unfortunate demise of Mohammed Shahid, India has lost a talented sportsman who played with immense passion & vigour," the PM tweeted.

PM Modi said that the help provided to Shahid was not adequate to save the ailing star.

"We tried our level best to save Mohammed Shahid but sadly, neither our help nor prayers were enough to save him. Tributes to him. RIP," he said.

Shahid was a former Indian skipper and an Olympics Gold Medal winner.
