Taj Bengal all set to play the perfect host to soccer legend Pele

Kolkata, Oct 10 (IBNS) Thirty-eight years ago 'The Black Pearl' enthralled football faithfuls of Kolkata (then Calcutta) with his soccer skills in a friendly match against Mohun Bagan at the Eden Gardens and he promised to return, Pele, now 74, will set foot in the city again on Oct 13.

To make his stay special, Taj Bengal, a landmark city hotel, is gearing up for the celebrations. Three restaurants of the hotel, The Junction, The Hub and Sonargaon will be offering exotic cocktails and foods in honour of the legend.

Samrat Dutta, General Manager, Taj Bengal said, “It is an honour and privilege to have the legend stay with us  at Taj Bengal”.

The food, prepared by the hotel's Executive Chef Sonu Koithara at Taj Bengal, will cater to both vegetarians and meat lovers.

Pele will visit Kolkata to attend an ISL match between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerela Blasters. The legend is also expected to attend a charity auction.

To celebrate Pele's arrival, The Junction, will present a selection of the finest cocktails which highlights his career, and the many accolades that were bestowed upon him. 

JERSEY NO 10

The iconic jersey number worn by “The King of Football” for both club and country gets a healthy dose of Cachaça, fruit juice and sugar. Shaken well, and served on the rocks in a tall glass, this will surely take you to the sunny beaches of Brazil.

OFFICIAL NATIONAL TREASURE

After the 1962 World Cup, to escape from being lured away by wealthy European clubs, the government of Brazil declared the Santos superstar, “Official national treasure”. The Junction tried to honour that title, by making a drink worthy of it. The traditional Caipirinha, which is the national cocktail of Brazil, brought to you Junction style, with an extra dose of Cachaça, and fresh Gandharaj lime to enhance the complete experience.

HOW DO YOU SPELL PELÉ ?? ........ EASY “ G-O-D ”

This was the response from a British commentator during the 1970 World Cup, when asked from his fellow colleague what the spelling of the football legend’s name was. This iconic quote has been given a Brazilian street culture twist, with a shot of Rum and your choice of soda, and the magic that follows....

KNEE-BREAKER

Battered and Bruised in the 1966 World Cup in England, Pelé had to face his arch enemy Eusébio and his Portuguese team-mates. However, this match was remembered for its brutality, and the foul made my Portuguese defenders, that the referees did not condemn.  Later on press labelled this as, “Getting away with murder”.  The Junction tries to come up with their very own version of this hard-hitting experience, with a concoction of Dark rum, guava juice and lime, served chilled in a tall glass filled with ice, Advisory -not to be tried by the faint-hearted.

EVEN THE SKY WAS CRYING

When Pelé played his last competetive match for New York Cosmos aganist his former club Santos, from Brazil, he played for either team in the two halves of the match, and ended his career by scoring a goal for the cosmos. As the game progressed, the heavens opened, drenching all the 75,000 congregation. The next day a Brzilian newspaper ran the headline, “Even the sky was crying.”To celebrate the final match of the King, and his extraordinary journey, The Junction brings to you a magical potion of blended Scotch whisky, lime and sugar syrup, New York Style, with a touch of grenadine.

To offer a memorable experience, Sonargaon of Taj Bengal will be offering a Special Veg Thali at INR 1900 + taxes and a Special Non Veg Thali at INR 2100 + taxes.

The Hub

The Hub will also be offering a Special ‘Pele’ Buffet inspired by the World’s Greatest Player and his contribution to football. The Buffet is available in both Lunch and Dinner.

The different food promotion across restaurants in Taj Bengal will continue till Oct 15.
