Nelson/IBNS: Bangladeshi batter Soumya Sarkar on Wednesday broke a 14-year-old record of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in the second One Day International (ODI) match against New Zealand here.

Sarkar, who opened the innings with Anamul Haque, shattered Tendulkar's record of highest individual score in an innings by a player from subcontinent in New Zealand.

The southpaw smashed 169 off 151 balls with the help of 22 fours and 2 sixes.

Previously, Tendulkar, a former India captain, held the record with his innings of unbeaten 163 against New Zealand in 2009.

Despite Sarkar's century, Bangladesh were defeated by New Zealand by seven wickets.

In reply to Bangladesh's 291 in 49.5 overs, the hosts slammed 296/3 in 46.2 overs.

Henry Nicholas' 95 and Will Young's 89 were the top scorers for the Kiwis.
