Rafael Nadal reaches 3rd round of Wimbledon

London, June 26 (IBNS): Surviving a scare, Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal defeated Lukas Rosol to reach the third round of the Wimbledon men's singles event here on Thursday.

Nadal fought back brilliantly to beat his  Czech oppnoent 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 6-4 as spectators enjoyed a well contested battle from the duo.

"I knew I had to keep fighting, waiting for my moment," Nadal, who reached the third round of the tournament for the first time since 2011, told BBC Sport.  

In the women's singles event, former champion Maria Sharapova and defending player Serena Williams cruised to the third round by winning their respective clashes.

Sharapova defeated Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 6-1 in her clash.

Serena beat South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-1 6-1 to move to the next round of the tournament.
