A high-level delegation from the United Kashmir People's National Party (UKPNP) recently held a crucial meeting with British Labour Member of Parliament, Andrew McDonald, at Middlesbrough in the United Kingdom to discuss human rights isssues in POK and Gilgit Baltistan.

During the meeting, the delegation, led by party chairman Sardar Shaukat Ali Kashmiri, discussed several pressing issues concerning human rights, lack of basic facilities, land grabbing, and occupation of tourist resorts and hilltops in the regions.

The UKPNP delegates shed light on the discriminatory practices preventing Kashmiris from participating in elections without pledging allegiance to Pakistan. They also expressed concern over restrictions on freedom of expression, media, and publications in the region.

The resurgence of extremist and radical groups recruiting youth for jihadi activities and the forced disappearance of 22 young boys by a banned outfit were brought to the attention of MP Andrew McDonald.

The delegation highlighted the dire situation in PoK and Gilgit Baltistan, which suffer from deprivation and underdevelopment despite being administered by Pakistan.

Ongoing protests have been held against shortages of essential food items, inflation, electricity issues, and exploitation of natural resources. The plight of human rights activists and pro-Kashmir, pro-people, and pro-peace activists, who face persecution and are forced to seek refuge abroad, was also raised.

The meeting served as a platform for the UKPNP delegation to advocate for the rights and well-being of the people in the region and seek international support for these critical issues.

Sardar Shaukat Ali Kashmiri's concerns regarding environment and land grabbing in PoK, as well as the impact of mega projects like CPEC on climate and weather, were highlighted as urgent matters requiring attention.

MP Andrew McDonald assured the delegates that peace and harmony are essential for the people of PoK and Gilgit Baltistan to live fulfilling lives.

He emphasized that without the rule of law, freedom of expression, and freedom of movement, lasting peace and stability cannot be achieved in the region.

The UKPNP delegation expressed gratitude to Andrew McDonald for providing them with this opportunity to share their views and concerns. The pressing issues discussed in the meeting call for collaboration and action from the international community to protect lives, wildlife, and the environment in the affected regions.
