'Join other party or form your own': Congress to rebel leaders

New Delhi/IBNS: Amid the widening of the crack in the Congress after its dismal performance in Bihar polls, the top brass has reacted sharply to the rebels who have raised doubt over the way the opposition force is working in the current saffronised political spectrum.

"If some leaders think that Congress is not the right party for them then they may set up a new party or can join any other party which they think is progressive and according to their interest. But they should not indulge in such embarrassing activities since it can erode the credibility of the Congress," Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told NDTV.

Chowdhury further said, "Such senior leaders should not indulge in such embarrassing sweeping statements. They enjoy proximity to the Gandhi family. They can raise issues before the party leadership or in the right party forum."

"If such leaders are serious about revamping the Congress party, then they should try to prove their mettle on the ground. Did they volunteer to work for the party during the recent Bihar elections," he added.

Chowdhury's remark came in the backdrop of senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal's statement where he had said the time for the party's introspection was over.

On the Congress' performance in the recent Assembly elections in Bihar and bypolls in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, Sibal, in an interview with The Indian Express, said, "Where we were an alternative the people of that state have not reposed their confidence in the Congress in the manner expected by us. So the time for introspection is over. We know the answers. The Congress must be brave and willing to recognise them."

"...we need to do several things at several levels — organisationally, articulation in the media in whatever form, putting up people who the people want to listen to, providing an active, thoughtful leadership who can articulate with a lot of circumspection," the senior Congress leader said.

Even after contesting 70 seats in Bihar, the Congress could win only 19 of them denying Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan the required push to touch the majority mark.
