Kerala man forced to carry ailing father in arms after cops stop auto amid lockdown, state HRC registers suo moto case
Kollam/IBNS: The Kerala state Human Rights Commission (HRC) has taken a suo moto cognizance of reports stating a middle aged man was forced to carry his 65-year-old ailing father in arms and had to walk nearly a kilometre on Wednesday after his auto-rickshaw was allegedly stopped by police due to the ongoing Coronavirus lockdown.
According to reports, the 65-year-old man from Kulathupuzha village in Kollam district was admitted to Punalur Taluk Hospital and he was discharged on Wednesday morning.
When his son was taking him back to home in an auto-rickshaw, local police allegedly stopped their vehicle in Punalur city despite showing hospital documents.
Policemen at the naka point allegedly forced the family to get down from the vehicle along with the ailing senior man following which the son had to walk close to one kilometre on foot with his father in his arms.
After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the state Human Rights Commission of Kerala registered a suo moto case while local police claimed that the vehicle had not been seized.
"Policemen didn't seize the auto-rickshaw, they were just checking papers of the vehicle and the patient which might cause a little delay," a local police official told IBNS.
"During the checking, the family left the auto-rickshaw and had started walking, but the person returned in his auto later," the official added.
