Kolkata/IBNS: After following the Centre's advice to lockdown to combat COVID-19, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop all flight operations to the state with an immediate effect.

In her letter to the Prime Minister, Banerjee said, "... we are seriously concerned that Government of India is still allowing operation of flights causing a huge breach of shutdown and quarantine protocol with no arrangements of social distancing that we are so painfully managing in the State.

I, would therefore, request you to kindly arrange to issue necessary instructions to stop all flights coming to West Bengal with immediate effect so that the source of spreading infection is effectively contained and lockdown in the state is implemented in true letter and spirit."

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases across the country rose to 415 on Monday while seven people have been infected with Coronavirus in West Bengal.

The Centre has already stopped the landing of all international commercial flights in India for a week which began on Mar 22.

The train services have been stopped till Mar 31.

The lockdown has been issued by the West Bengal government from 5 pm on Mar 23 to 12 pm on Mar 27.

The Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal took a slew of measures as the virus has kept the country on edge over the last few weeks.

All government, government-aided and private educational institutions have been closed till Apr 15 by the state.

West Bengal Minister Aroop Biswas announced that all shootings for Bengali films, television serials and digital contents shall remain suspended between Mar 18 and 30.

In a major step, the West Bengal government invoked provisions of Epidemic Disease Act, 1897, so that no patient can escape while undergoing treatment for Coronavirus.

Also a 200-cr fund has been created to fight the disease.
