Bengaluru, July 30 (UNI): The ruling BJP in Karnataka fielded MLA Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri as the party's candidate for the election to the post of Speaker of Karnataka Assembly.

The election for the Speaker's post which will be held on Wednesday.

According to party sources, the state BJP leaders zeroed in on the name of Kageri, after former Speaker K G Bopaiah, who they initially chose for the coveted post, did not show any inclination.

The post of the Speaker had remained vacant, following the resignation of incumbent Ramesh Kumar, who had stepped down from the post on Monday.

The former minister and MLA from Sirsi in Uttarakannada district, would soon file his nomination as the candidate to the Speaker's post, BJP sources said.

According to official sources, no decision was taken by the Opposition Congress to field its candidate, as BJP has a clear edge in the 208-member House, enjoying majority with 106 members.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who was sworn-in as the Chief Minister on Friday, proved his majority in the Karnataka Assembly on Monday.
