Bombay High Court upholds Maharashtra government's Maratha quota decision

Mumbai, June 27 (IBNS): The Bombay High Court on Thursday upheld the Mahrashtra government's decision to provide quota to the Maratha community, media reports said.

The government had decided to give quotas to the community in government jobs and educational institutions.

However, the court has struck down the cap of 16 per cent quota which was fixed by the state government stating the quantum as "unjustifiable".

The verdict was passed by Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre on a petition which claimed the quota would provide the community with "permanent crutches". The petitioners also stated the quota will exceed the reservation cap of 50 per cent fixed by the Supreme Court.

The decision to provide 16 per cent quota to the Maratha community was taken by the state government on Nov 30, 2018.
