West Bengal: Fire breaks out in godown adjacent to Howrah Bridge, no casualty

Kolkata, Jun 8 (UNI): A century-old godown, stacked with inflammable materials, plastic granules and paint containers, on the bank of the Ganges near Howrah Bridge was razed to the ground in a massive fire on Saturday.

At least 20 fire tenders were fighting to tame the blaze.

There had been no report of any loss of life so far, but the damage to the property in the fire may run into several crores of rupees.

The godown, situated on Jagannath Ghat, a sort of heritage site, was hired by one Inland Transport Company.

A fire official, who was still at the site, said the flames were brought under control but it would take the whole day to complete the cooling process.

He said inflammable articles were stacked in the godown.

The godown was also a landmark of the Howrah Station.

He said the fire may have sparked from nearby illegal shanties on a row along the Ganges.

The fire was first noticed at around 2.30 am.

A parked vehicle was also destroyed in the blaze.

West Bengal Fire Brigade Minister Sujit Bose visited the area.
