Guwahati, Sept 24 (IBNS): The troops of Assam Rifles apprehended three hardcore militants of banned NSCN-K and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Sunday, officials said on Monday.

According to the reports, based on intelligence input, the Kadamtala battalion of Assam Rifles on Sunday launched operation at New Kaiphundai area of Tamenglong district and nabbed three Naga militants.

A top official of Assam Rifles said that, the nabbed militants were involved in the incident on Friday in which they had kidnapped a truck driver when he refused to pay the extortion amount demanded by them.

“The militant group had also fired to intimidate the truck drivers and the incident took place on NH-37 near Makru Bridge,” the Assam Rifles official said.

Following the incident, the troops of Assam Rifles with the help of Manipur Police launched an operation at New Kaiphundai area and apprehended the militants.

Security personnel recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition including two US made M-Series assault rifles, 425 rounds of live ammunition and three hand grenades in possession from them.

Several insurgent groups like NSCN-K, LTT (erstwhile UTLA (P)) and NSCN-IM are reported to be involved in such type of incidents like extortion, kidnapping, illegal tax collection from the trucks on the National Highway.

Assam Rifles had earlier delivered a lethal blow to the insurgents active in the area by neutralising the C-in-C of the then UTLA (P) group and apprehending four militants with sophisticated arms and ammunition in a series of operations which started from June 10.

Recently, four militants of ZUF, including its secretary of HR and Welfare, were apprehended along with arms and ammunition from Ramgaijang village, which lies along the NH-37 in Cachar district of Assam.
