New Delhi, Apr 22 (IBNS): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Sunday announced party leader Sitaram Yechury has been re-elected as the party's General Secretary.

The party said Yechury has been re-elected to the post unanimously.

Yechury had taken over as the General Secretary of the party from Prakash Karat during the 21st  party congress  in 2015.

Yechury has been re-elected to the post at a time when party lost the Assembly polls in the Tripura.

BJP defeated the party in the state to form the government in Tripura earlier this year.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also formed the government in the state for two terms by ending the CPI-M rule of 34 years.

The party tweeted: "#CPIM22PartyCongress has elected 95 Member Central Committee where 1 seat has been left vacant. The list also has 2 Permanent invitees and 6 special invitee. The Central Committee has also elected a 17 member PolitBuro."
