Major David Manlun laid to rest with full military honour

Guwahati, June 8 (IBNS): A day of gloom set over Shillong as Major David Manlun, 164 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) (PU-2 Naga Regt), who got martyred while battling the dreaded ULFA (I) and NSCN (K) insurgents at Mon District (Nagaland) on Wednesday, was laid to rest on Thursday.

The funeral of Major David was carried out by Assam Regimental Centre at Regimental Cemetery.

The martyred officer was laid to rest with full military honour.

Kohima based Defence PRO Colonel Chiranjeet Konwer said that Meghalaya governor Banwari Lal Purohit laid the wreath at the residence of Major David at Happy Valley in Shillong.

The final journey from his house till the burial ground was witnessed by thousands of civilians who thronged the streets to bid final adieu to their favourite son.

The National Flag which was draped over the martyred officer was handed over by Brigadier Sudhir Kumar Jha, YSM, Commandant ARC to Subedar Major (Retired) Khan Zhalan (Ex 5 ASSAM), father of the martyred officer.

The funeral was attended by various dignitaries that included Major General SK Dutta, Officiating General Officer Commanding 101 Area Brigadier Amrit Lal, Station Commander and Brigadier RS Thakur, Commandant 58 Gorkha Training Centre.

Major David Manlun was martyred during gun battle with a militant group of ULFA (I) and NSCN (K) at Lapa Lempong hilltop in Oting village near Tizit in Nagaland’s Mon district, about 25 kms from Indo-Myanmar border.

Three ULFA (I) militants and a civilian were killed during the gun fight with 12 Para Commandos of the Army and Naga Territorial Army.
