Uran terror alert: NSG teams deployed in Mumbai

India Blooms News Service | | 22 Sep 2016, 11:43 pm
Mumbai, Sept 22 (IBNS): With high alert being sounded in Mumbai on Thursday, the National Security Guard (NSG) have been deployed in three locations in the financial capital and another team has been kept ready in Delhi to be flown if required, media reports said.

The Western Naval Command has sounded the highest state of alert along the Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Raigad coasts in Maharashtra after reports of suspicious movement of an armed group,.

The alert was sounded after two schoolchildren in Uran, 50 km off Mumbai, reported that they had seen men dressed in black carrying guns on Thursday morning.

Uran has an ammunition depot and is also the home to a JNPT container terminal.

A search operation was on in tandem with Maharashtra Police and the Coast Guard with helicopters making sorties at and around Uran while the  anti-terror squad of Maharashtra Police  and the navy are  conducting combing.

According to NDTV, "ONGC" and "school" were two words that the children overheard the men saying, sources say.

The men were in "Pathan suits" and carried backpacks, the children reportedly told their principal, who informed the police.

Uran is about 50 km from Mumbai, where 166 people were killed in November 2008 when landmarks in the city were attacked by 10 terrorists who came by sea.  It is close to important locations like the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
