Will make agitation national: Hardik Patel

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IBNS): Hardik Patel, who is demanding reservation for the Patel community in Gujarat, on Sunday gave a 48-hour deadline to the government for providing compensation to the families of all people who died in last week's protests in the state.
He said if the compensation is not provided, there will be "an announcement from Surat as well."

The 21-year-old, who spearheaded an agitation at a mega rally in Ahmedabad last week, also said he would take the agitation to Delhi and across the nation if need be.

"We want to take our movement all over the nation," he said.

"We are thinking of holding a protest at Jantar Mantar here in Delhi, and also in Lucknow... This is not a 100 meters race, it is a marathon," he announced.

Patel is currently in Delhi and will meet leaders of other sections demanding reservation -- including Gujjars and Jats.

His agitation led to widespread violence, incidents of arson and stone-pelting across Ahmedabad.

His deadline comes on a day when PM Modi on his month radio address 'Mann Ki Baat' expressed anguish over the incident in Ahmedabad.

"The events of Gujarat have anguished the nation. People will feel shocked if this happens in land of Gandhi and Sardar Patel," said Modi.

At least ten people had died in the violence while buses and shops were burnt following the agitation. The army had held flag marches in Ahmedabad, Surat and other cities and around 5000 para-military forces personnel had been pressed into service as well.
