Govt's bag breather for schoolchildren

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 27 Nov 2018, 05:01 pm

New Delhi, Nov 27 (IBNS): School bags are set to become lighter with India's human resource development ministry issuing a directive to this effect to states and Union territories.

The government seeks to have Class X students carry bags weighing not more than 5kg while the ceiling for Classes VIII and IX is 4.5kg.

The limit for Classes VI and VII is 4kg, III to V, 3kg and I and II 1.5kg, say reports.

The Union government also seeks to abolish homework for Classes I and II.

According to the notification, only language and mathematics will be taught in Classes I and II while for Classes III to V, the prescribed subjects are language, mathematics and environmental science.

Students also should not be asked to bring additional materials or extra books because that would increase the weight of their bags.

It waits to be seen how quickly all states and Union territories implement these rules.
