Gujarat University is one of the largest universities in the country. It was established in 1949. Almost 2 lakh students are enrolled in various disciplines in the university every year. Gujarat University has grown rapidly in last 67 years and has now almost 235 affiliated colleges.

There are several factors that has contributed in recent years in the rising prominence of college. The authorities are constantly bolstering the university management and rolling out state-of-the-art facilities for its students that includes Skill and Innovation Council, Start-up and Entrepreneurship Council, Women’s Development Cell, employment Bureau, James Reaney Canadian Study centre. Apart from various conventional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, university has launched various short-term courses targeted at NRI and International students.

1. Historical Significance


The initial conception of the university was laid in the early 1920s by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Ganesh VasudevMavanlankar. However, this plan was realised only after the independence of the country. The university was finally established in 1949 under the Gujarat University Act by then Government of Gujarat.


It was built under the massive project of rearrangement of university education in Bombay State post-independence. The recommendation for creating the university was laid down by the committee formed under the leadership of Ganesh VasudevMavalankar.


2. Sprawling Campus Spread over 260 acres


Gujarat University’s massive campus is spread over 260 acres of land in the Navarangpura area of Ahmedabad.The campus is equipped with all the modern amenities of a world class university campus. University has individual sporting arenas for various games like basketball, football and hockeyas well as Hostel (for both boys and girls), Health Centre, Internet Access centre, Open Air Theatre, Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET Centre).
The university has 34 Post-Graduate University departments and 221 P.G. Centres.


3. GUSEC – Fostering Startup Spirit in Students


Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC) is start up incubator set-up for supporting various entrepreneurs, startups and innovators in Gujarat. The main aim of university is to foster the spirt of entrepreneurship and innovation among all the enrolled students of the university.

The university aims to achieve two main objectives through GUSEC, namely – developing first full-fledged support system for non-tech innovations in the country in disciplines like science, arts, commerce, law, commerce and the flagship initiative, “Research to Revenue” which aims to convert 5% research activity into commercial products, services and technology.

The JUMPSTART project by GUSEC awarded INR 40, 000 as grant for innovative business ideas and startup initiatives. GUSEC’s startup ‘Luminati’ was India’s only representation at world’s largest garment show.

Apart from GUSEC, GU also has Skill and Innovation Council as well as Employment Bureau for running career oriented initiatives and programmes.


4. GURU – Gujarat’s Only Campus Radio Station


Gujarat University in March 2012 started campus radio service called GURU on 90.8 MHz. This was one of the first of its kind initiative in the state of Gujarat and fifth University in India to do so. The channel hosts a number of entertainment shows and updates students about college buzz and events.


5. Short Term Courses for NRIs and International Candidates

Gujarat University in a bid to promote various traditional disciplines and vocational programmes has targeted several short-term courses for NRIs and Foreign Students. The university may not be very high on social buzz or campus news because of students’ fests and other mega events, but initiatives like GUSEC and Skill and Innovation Council are sure to strike chord with aspirants. There has been a paradigm shift from learning oriented approach to more career and innovation oriented approach in higher education institutes.
