Canada: PC party raises concerns about EVMs in Ontario election

Toronto, Jun 1 (IBNS): The Progressive Conservative (PC) party has raised concerns about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which will be used in Jun 7 Ontario elections, media reports said.

The EVMs will be used for the first time on Jun 7 in Canada's polling history.

The machine will be used to cast and count the number of votes polled.

The PC party lawyer, Arthur Hamilton, flagged some concerns including hacking and the certification of vote-counting machines.

On May 17, the PC party officials sent a letter to Elections Ontario and accused the latter of providing the former with an inadequate information about the machine.

The officials had requested Elections Ontario for a private briefing on the machine. However, Elections Ontario turned down the requests of the officials.

Chief Administrative Officer, Elections Ontario, has been quoted by CBC News as saying, "Among the 28 parties, there's a very high level of confidence in the technology and we have had very few concerns raised at all."

"Integrity is the cornerstone of our organization. We have the utmost confidence in this technology."

However, the Liberals and the New Democratic Party (NDP) said they have no issues with the EVMs.

The machine will scan voter cards and tabulate marked ballots.
