Canada PM Trudeau keeps door open for delay in marijuana legalisation

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 02 May 2018, 11:39 pm

Ottawa, May 2 (IBNS): Clouds have gathered around the federal government's decision to legalise marijuana in Canada as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted at a possible delay in the implementation of the new law, media reports said.

While interacting with media, Trudeau did not clearly state whether marijuana will be legalised from Jul 1 as earlier decided.

The PM has been quoted by CTV News, "We'll continue to consult a broad range of Canadians."

"And as our parliamentary secretary Bill Blair says regularly, legalization is not an event, it's a process," the PM added.

He also said the process will continue.

According to reports, the Senate aboriginal people's committee told the government to hold on the legalisation for a year so that a broader discussion with indigenous people can occur.

The report also stated the federal government's lack of consultation does not go with its claim to develop a better relationship with indigenous people.

Apart from legalising, the federal government had also decided to make an age of majority to use recreational marijuana and also to decide on the retail network of stores where marijuana could be sold.

However, youth in possession of cannabis will not be criminalised from henceforth.

But any car driver or passenger will not be allowed to consume cannabis.
