Ontario’s equal pay for equal work kicks in
Toronto, Apr 1 (IBNS): The equal pay for equal work legislation took effect from today in Canada's second largest and most populous province Ontario.
The province will ensure that part-time, casual and seasonal employees are paid on a par with full-time workers.
The move comes three months after the Liberal government increased minimum wage to $14 per hour.
The law is applicable to workers who have similar responsibilities. The move is also aimed at closing the gender pay gap, which Ontario believes still exists though it is illegal to discriminate in payment of wages based on gender.
“There are still gender issues, where women are making less than men,” Liberal MPP for Ottawa-Orléans Marie-France Lalonde said.
“In certain sectors, what we've seen is that part-time employees — primarily women and new Canadians — were being asked to do the exact same work as a full-time employee but being paid minimum wage,” Lalonde said.
Small business owners are not overtly worried by the new legislation as many feel that they are doing their best to address the issue. They believe that “employees are the most important asset” of their businesses.
