Canada: Snowy conditions and high winds cause power outages in Ontario

Toronto, Apr 7 (IBNS): A series of power outages across southern and eastern Ontario, due to heavy snow and high winds, were caused this morning, media reports said.

Hydro One tweeted that a total of 207 outages had affected almost 45,000 customers and that they were responding to these in south and central Ontario, CBCNew reports said.

Active outages were experienced in Caledonia near Hamilton and just north of Stouffville and Orillia area.

Schools buses in Dufferin-Peel Catholic District and Peel District school board in Caledon and Dufferin County had been cancelled.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had been dealing with multiple crashes on icy roads north of the city and Commuters had been advised by OPP by to leave themselves extra time for this morning's commute, CBC Toronto's overnight video-producer Tony Smyth reports said.

The city had been preparing for wet snow by laying down salt.

20 cms. of snow was in forecasted for Monday and drivers had been asked by OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt to be prepared for winter driving conditions as they head out this morning.

"You've got to deal with what we're having," Schmidt told CBC Toronto. "You don't want to be the one that ends up in the ditch and has their day spoiled”.

Hydro One customers had been advised to check their outage map for the latest updates.
