Dasu attack: Pakistan to compensate Chinese victims

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 19 Jan 2022, 06:06 pm

Islamabad: Pakistan government has decided to compensate 36 Chinese nationals who were killed or wounded in Dasu terror attack last year.

The move is seen as a step to remove a major irritant in bilateral relations between the two nations.

A total of 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis, lost their lives and 28 others were hurt in a suicide attack on a bus carrying Chinese workers to the site of the Dasu Hydropower Project in July last year.

The government has worked out four different compensation amounts ranging from $4.6 million (Rs 810 million) to $20.3 million (Rs 3.6 billion), The Express Tribune reported on Tuesday, quoting its sources.

Pakistan has decided to make the payment despite there being no legal or contractual obligation on the government, the newspaper reported.

The World Bank is funding the Dasu Hydropower Project.

It is not falling under the scope of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
