Islamabad: Police in Pakistan's Balochistan province have launched an investigation after a video went viral showing two men being forced to walk barefoot on hot embers to prove their innocence following allegations of theft.

The footage is from Sanjawi tehsil in Ziarat district. The two men were accused of stealing equipment from a shop, The Friday Times reported.

The 'ritual' was arranged after reaching a 'mutual consensus' to resolve the dispute.
The daily quoted one of the victims, Gul Zaman, as saying that two weeks earlier that he informed his employer about a theft of some tractors, batteries and generators.

However, the owner blamed Zaman and another employee, Mohammad Raza, for the crime and tortured them. To prove their innocence, the two men were told to walk across embers barefoot.

The video showed the two men taking turns to walk across a pit, some 10 to 12 ft long, filled with hot embers, The Friday Times reported. They were then acquitted, embraced and garlanded.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Hassan Anwar said an investigation has been started but no action has been taken against the assembly which ordered the punishment.
