Dhaka, Sept 1 (IBNS):  Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia on Sunday said the bomb blast, which hit Bangladesh capital Dhaka’s Science Laboratory area on Saturday night, targeted cops.

He said it on the basis of circumstantial evidences of the blast.

The bomb was an improvised explosive device (IED), Asaduzzaman Mia told journalist at a press briefing at his office in Dhaka, reported The Daily Star.

Two policemen, including a security detail of LGRD Minister Tazul Islam, were injured in the attack when the minister was passing through Dhaka’s Science Laboratory area around 9:20 pm yesterday. The minister was unhurt in the attack, reported the newspaper.

Several people have been detained in connection with the incident so far, media reports said.

A case has been filed today, accusing some unidentified miscreants over last night's bombing, reported The Daily Star.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahurul Islam, in-charge of Science Lab Police Box, filed the case with New Market Police Station today, Abdul Mannan, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of New Market Police Station told The Daily Star.

US-based  SITE Intelligence Group said Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

"IS Claims Credit for Bomb Blast on Police in Bangladeshi Capital," SITE tweeted.

Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said the crude bomb attack on police in Dhaka should not be played down.

He said the blast could be a precursor to a bigger plot by terrorists.

“Police were undoubtedly the target of the attack. It is possible they’re implementing these smaller incidents as ‘test cases’ ahead of a bigger attack,” Quader was quoted as saying by bdnews24.
