Facebook's Free Basics receive a jolt in Egypt, shut down by government

Cairo, Jan 6 (IBNS) Just a week after Facebook's Free Basics, an ambitious project by the social networking site to provide free internet access in developing countries was suspended by Indian telecom regulators, Egypt too walked the same path and shut down the service, media reports said.

Though Facebook played an important role in the 2011 uprisings in the country, the reason for the suspension was not clear as of now.

Government officials have however maintained that it was not due to security concerns.

Earlier in 2015 in India, Facebook's Free Basics was seen as a threat to net neutrality, with pundits harboring the opinion that the new project was a planned scheme by Facebook to have complete control over contents on the internet.
