Jerusalem: At least seven people died in a terror attack at a synagogue in Israel's East Jerusalem region on Friday, media reports said.

The 21-year-old terrorist arrived at Neve Yaakov street shortly after 8 p.m. and opened fire at people leaving the Ateret Avraham synagogue after Friday night prayers, reports The Jerusalem Post.

After entering and attacking the people in the synagogue, the shooter reportedly started chasing after people who were trying to escape, the newspaper reported.

Police later 'neutralised' him.

According to local media reports, the terrorist was identified as  Kheiry Alkam from east Jerusalem.

Israel Police tweeted: "The initial investigation of the terrorist's identity suggests that he committed the terrorist attack by himself. Findings suggest that he is a 21 year old resident of East Jerusalem."

Police said the weapon and vehicle used by the terrorist were apprehended by police forces.

"Security forces are continuing activity to check for others involved in the attack," police tweeted.

"Following a pursuit and fire exchange with the terrorist, police officers neutralized the terrorist and he was pronounced dead. 7 civilians were killed in the attack and 3 additional were injured," read another tweet posted by the police.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly  wrote on Twitter: "Appalling reports of a terror attack in Neve Yaakov this evening. To attack worshippers at a synagogue on Holocaust Memorial Day, and during Shabbat, is horrific. We stand with our Israeli friends."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "Our thoughts are with the Israeli people following the terrorist attack in Jerusalem. It is particularly tragic on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We condemn this attack and express our condolences to the victims’ families. May their memory be a blessing."
