Prince Philip dies, announces Buckingham Palace

London: Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday.

He was 99.

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history, reports BBC.

In a statement, the Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.Further announcements will made in due course," read the statement.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss," the statement said.

UK PM Boris Johnson tweeted to mourn the death of the Prince.

Indian PM Narendra Modi tweeted: "My thoughts are with the British people and the Royal Family on the passing away of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He had a distinguished career in the military and was at the forefront of many community service initiatives. May his soul rest in peace."
