Algiers, Apr 11 (IBNS) : An Algerian military transport plane crashed  on Wednesday morning shortly after taking off from the Boufarik base in Algeria killing 105 people on board, local media quoted a statement by civil defense as saying.

Algerian state radio had earlier reported that at least 100 passengers were killed in the crash.

The plane, a Russia-made Ilyushin Il-76, was carrying scores of military troops, according to the reports.

Algerie24, a local news website, said the plane was heading to the western Algerian city of Bechar.

It is yet to be known how the crash happened.

Television images showed black smoke billowing from the crash site, some 20 miles south of Algiers.  on the way to the city of Blida, with rescue personnel milling the shattered plane.

The crash at Boufarik would be the worst in Algeria since 2003 when an Air Algerie jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Tamanrasset, killing 102 people.
