London, Jun 8 (IBNS): Polling for the United Kingdom General Election began on Thursday morning amid tight security, according to media reports.

Prime Minister Theresa May had declared it on April 18 this year.

Theresa May, representing the Conservatives, is vying with Jeremy Corbyn from Labour Party in this General Election.

A total of 650 Westminster MPs will be elected for the new Parliament through this poll.

According to media reports, the outcome of the General Election will determine who will negotiate Britain's departure from the European Union.

Already embroiled in debates about the country's Brexit proposition, UK saw two major terrorist attacks during the campaign run up.

The number of registered voters have gone up to 46.9 million people from 46.4 million in 2015, media report said.

Polls opened at 07:00 BST at more than 40,000 polling stations across the country, with counting starting once voting ends at 22:00 BST, the BBC reported.
