New York, Sept 3 (IBNS) A happy day for the Indian tennis fraternity as Rohan Bopanna and his Romanian partner Florin Mergea entered the second round in the Men's Doubles category as did Leander Peas and Martina Hingis in the Mixed Doubles division, here on Wednesday.

Not everything went as planned as top seeded Men’s Doubles players Bob and Mike Bryan were ousted by fellow American pair of S Johnson and S Querrey 6(4)-7(7), 7-5, 3-6 in the first round.

Bopanna and his partner though raced past their opponent. The Indo-Romanian pair defeated USA’s A Krajicek and N Monroe 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Martina Hingis and Leander Peas started off their mixed-doubles campaign with a thunderous win as the experienced pair rallied past their opponent, American pair of C Liu and T Fritz 6-2, 6-2 to move up the table.

In the Men’s singles division, World number one Novak Djokovic went about his usual business in style beating A Haider-Maurer of Austria 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to set up a third round date with Italy’s Andreas Seppi.

Rafael Nadal was stretched in the opening set of his second round match by Argentine D Schwartzman but Rafa played some grueling tennis to see him through. The score line ended 7(7)-6(5), 6-3, 7-5 in his favor.

Jo Wilfred Tsonga beat M Granollers in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to emerge victorious in his second round battle.

The Women’s single division saw both the Williams sisters move up to the third round.

Serena defeated Kiki Bartens 7(7)-6(5), 6-3.

In a game lasting over an hour and a half, the current world number one served 7 aces in comparison to the 3 her opponent served. She also hit 23 winners, 2 more than Bartens and had higher unforced errors with 34, 3 more than her Dutch opponent.

Serena will take on B Mattek-Sands in the third round.

Venus triumphed over fellow American Irina Falconi, 6-3, 6(2)-7(7), 6-2.

A Radwanska defeated M Linette of Poland, 6-3, 6-2.
