Mumbai/IBNS: Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a blow ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as star New Zealand opening batter Devon Conway has been ruled out for eight weeks for a medical issue.

Conway underwent a thumb surgery after suffering an injury during the T20I series against Australia.

The southpaw will require at least eight weeks for recovery, stated New Zealand cricket.

In an X post, Blackcaps stated, "Opener Devon Conway will this week undergo surgery on the left thumb he damaged during the KFC T20I series against Australia.

"Following several scans and specialist advice, the decision was made to operate on Conway with a likely recovery period of at least eight weeks."

Conway, who was bought by the yellow brigade at Rs. 1 crore in 2022, was an important CSK member after scoring 672 runs in 16 matches last season.

He was also the Player of the Match in the IPL 2023 final which was won by CSK over Gujarat Titans.

The southpaw will at least miss the half of IPL 2024, which will kickstart on March 22.

The tournament will witness the opening match between CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22.
