Bollywood mourns Shashi Kapoor's death

Mumbai, Dec 4 (IBNS): Bollywood fraternity on Monday expressed their sadness over the death of actor Shashi Kapoor.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said: "As the skies burst and it begins to rain in this part of Mumbai. My heart is filled with deep gratitude. Thank you Sir ! You touched our lives only the way you could have."

Minister of Textiles  and Information & Broadcasting Smriti Zubin Irani, who had also worked in television serials, said: "Saddened by the demise of legendary actor Shashi Kapoor ji. His contribution to Indian Cinema is monumental. Shashi ji’s passing away marks the end of an era. My deepest condolences to his loved ones, colleagues and fans. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti!"

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi tweeted: "We will miss you."

Filmmaker Karan Johar said: "#RIPShashiKapoor ...the most charming and enigmatic actor ever...a gentleman movie star! His legacy in film and theatre is exceptional...thoughts and prayers with the family....his work will always live on."

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra mourned as he tweeted: "Totally at a loss for words."

Actor Jaaved Jaaferi said: "One of my favourites passed away today. A handsome charming gentleman who entertained us for 40+ years. His endearing smile will be embedded in my memories. RIP #ShashiKapoor."

Actress Bipasha Basu tweeted: "RIP Sir. You will be deeply missed by all #ShashiKapoor."

Expressing sadness, film critic Taran Adarsh posted: "#ShashiKapoor ji is no more... An era comes to an end... Thoughts and prayers with the family... RIP. "

Veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor, who charmed his way into millions of hearts with his on screen persona playing the handsome romantic hero of the 1960s, 70s and 80s films, passed away in Mumbai. He was 79.

He died in a Mumbai hospital.

One of the foremost actors from the Kapoor clan of Bollywood, he had acted in a large number of Hindi films besides in a few English-language films. He also directed movies.

He acted in some of the superhit movies of 70s with co-actor and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, often playing siblings.

His romantic paring with many Bollywood heroines led to several super hit films.

He was born as Balbir Raj Kapoor and was the youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor and the younger brother of iconic superstars Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. His wife Jennifer Kendal (sister of actress Felicity Kendal) had died in 1984. They had three children- Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, and Sanjana Kapoor.

He was conferred  the Padmabhushan by the Indian government in 2011.

He acted in some of the superhits like Sharmilee, Kabhi Kabhie, Baseraa, Deewar, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Satyam Shivan Sundaram, A Gale Lag Ja, Suhaag, Kanyadaan among others romancing heroines like Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, Rakhee, Nanda and others.

He had also acted in films like Bombay Talkie  by Merchant Ivory Productions.
