Hit-and-run case: Celebs stand by Salman

Mumbai, May 6 (IBNS) As Bollywood megastar Salman Khan was was sentenced to five years in jail after he was convicted by a Mumbai sessions court in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case, celebrities took on Twitter to express their reactions on the issue.

Salman Khan's co-star in 'Dabangg', Sonakshi Sinha tweeted: "Terrible news. Dnt knw wht to say except tht will stand by @BeingSalmanKhan no matter what. Hes a good man and no 1 can tk tht away frm him."

Actress Alia Bhatt said: "It hurts when your own are punished, even if they are in the wrong. We love you and are standing by you."

Standing beside Salman Khan in his moment of crisis, singer Sunidhi Chauhan posted: "I agree with all your opinions but I would still support @BeingSalmanKhan for all the good that he has done for countless people."

Filmmaker Karan Johar said: "I can only respond emotionally just now...my thoughts and prayers are with Salman and his family today....I wish them strength."

Filmmaker Farah Khan said: "In Dubai.. But thoughts n prayers are still in Mumbai with @BeingSalmanKhan n his family."

Actor Arjun Kapoor said: "Cant wrap my head around what's happening,scary how fickle life is,hope n pray he emerges stronger like he has in the past @BeingSalmanKhan."

Singer Mika Singh tweeted: "Guys keep praying for big brother @BeingSalmanKhan ... I'm sure all your blessings will be heard !!"

Actress Dia Mirza said: "He is the man that saved my Mothers life. That I will never forget. #SalmanKhan."

She again said: "My previous tweet was NOT a comment on the proceedings of the verdict. It was an emotional confession of a grateful friend. #SalmanKhan."

Actress Soha Ali Khan tweeted: "It would be inappropriate to comment on the court's decision but my thoughts and prayers are with Salman bhai and his family. My sympathies also extend to the victims of the accident - there has been tragedy on both sides and may God give strength to them all."

Tennis star Sania Mirza tweeted: "Nothing else to say..Except stay strong @BeingSalmanKhan ..like u always have."

In a temporary relief to Salman Khan, who has been sentenced to five years in jail after he was convicted by a Mumbai sessions court in connection with the 2002 hit-and-run case, the Bollywood megastar has been granted two days interim bail on Wednesday.

The Bombay High Court granted him the bail, hours after the megastar, who is known for delivering successful films every year, was convicted and sentenced in connection with the case in which a pedestrian was crushed under the wheels of the SUV the actor was driving.

All charges against him have been proved.

Prosecution lawyer Abha Singh after the verdict told reporters: "He has been sentence to five years. We are happy because it gives the message that no one is above law in our country. We waited for it."

The 49-year-old actor faced charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Additional Sessions Judge DW Deshpande  pronounced his verdict in the case. The court told Salman that he was driving under the influence of liquor.

"All charges against you are proved," the judge told Salman before announcing the quantum of punishment.

Salman Khan was charged with killing one person and injuring four by ramming his SUV into a bakery shop in Bandra while driving 13 years ago.

One person, Nurullah Sharif, died in the accident and four were injured - Abdullah Shaikh, Muslim Shaikh, Munnu Khan and Mohammed Kalim.

Television news channels carried virtually nonstop coverage of the trial on Wednesday, with camera crews parked outside Khan’s home and surrounding the court.

Salman, the son of renowned film script writer Salim Khan,  has starred in more than 100 films. His  first hit was Maine Pyar Kiya in the 1980s.
