Mumbai/IBNS: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and his director-producer-screenwriter wife Kiran Rao on Saturday announced their divorce, ending their 15-year-old married life.

The couple in a long statement said they "would like to begin a new chapter" in their lives besides remaining committed to their son Azad.

"We began a planned separation some time ago, and now feel comfortable to formalise this arrangement, of living separately yet sharing our lives the way an extended family does.

"We remain devoted parents to our son Azad, who we will nurture and raise together."

The former couple has stated he would continue with his professional works with Kiran in various spheres.

"We will also continue to work as collaborators on films, Paani Foundation, and other projects that we feel passionate about," they said.

Three years after parting ways with his first wife Reena Dutta in 2002, Aamir, now 56, got married to Kiran on Dec 28, 2005.

Kiran was the assistant director of Ashutosh Gowariker on the sets of iconic Hindi film Lagaan, which had featured Aamir.
