Cruise tourism in India has huge potential to generate employment and revenue, says Union shipping minister

Mumbai, Aug 8 (IBNS): A special event titled 'The Dawn of Cruise Tourism in India' was inaugurated in Mumbai on Tuesday in the presence of Union Minister for Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, and Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Rashmi Verma.

The highlight of the event was to showcase the preparedness of Mumbai Port and Ministry of Shipping to host cruise vessels in the country

Three reports, 'Mumbai Port SoP’s for Cruise Operations', 'Road Map for Sea Cruise Tourism', and 'Cruise Terminals in India' were released.

With this new initiative, number of cruise ships visiting India could go up from 158 per year to 955 per year.

According to the Ministry, cruise tourism has the potential to boost Indian economy. Promotion of cruise tourism is expected to create over 2, 50,000 jobs and an expected revenue generation of Rs 35,500 crore.

"Tourism is one of the biggest employment generator sector and India's long coastline would enable in the growth of cruise tourism," the minister said in his address at the meeting.
