New Delhi: The INDIA bloc on Sunday announced that it would organise a mega rally on March 31 at Ramleela Maidan in Delhi to demonstrate against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 under the anti-money laundering law following raids at his official residence in the Civil Lines area of the capital city.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, INDIA bloc allies AAP and Congress announced the rally.

"Democracy and the country are in danger. All the INDIA-bloc parties will hold this 'maha rally' to safeguard the country's interests and democracy," AAP leader Gopal Rai said, reported India Today.

“By adopting dictatorship and ending democracy in the country, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested. There is anger in every person who loves and respects the Constitution and democracy. One by one, PM Modi is misusing the agencies to file fake cases against every opposition leader,” the AAP leader added.

Congress Delhi Chief Arvinder Singh Lovely also said, "March 31 'maha rally' will not be 'political' but a call to save the country's democracy and raise voice against Centre."

On Friday, a delegation of the leaders of the INDIA bloc met the Election Commission of India to register their protest over Arvind Kejriwal's arrest and the alleged targeting of opposition leaders ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

At the meeting, leaders of the INDIA bloc submitted a memorandum to the poll panel stating a series of recent incidents where central agencies had allegedly targeted opposition parties.

They argued that this indicated a lack of a fair and equitable environment for opposition parties, stressing the absence of a "level playing field."

INDIA bloc parties accused the ruling BJP of "unrelenting, blatant and illegal deployment of central agencies" to muzzle the opposition parties.
