DMDK chief Vijayakanth, who was on ventilator after testing Covid positive, passes away

Chennai/IBNS: Actor-politician Vijayakanth on Thursday, who was on a ventilator support after testing positive for Covid-19, passed away on Thursday, media reports said.

He was 71.

Vijayakanth, who was the head of DMDK, was suffering from illness.

He was brought to hospital and kept on ventilator support following his complaints of breathing.

Earlier in November, Vijayakanth was admitted to a hospital as he was suffering from cough and throat pain.

Vijayakanth, who predominantly worked in Tamil films like 'Sagaptham', 'Madura Veeran', founded DMDK in 2005.

He was the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly from 2011 to 2016.

Mourning his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, "Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

"His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti."
