A woman was severely hurt after her boyfriend, who is the son of a senior bureaucrat, allegedly tried to run his car over her in Maharashtra's Thane region.

The victim alleged that her boyfriend beat her, attempted to strangle her and tried to mow her down following a heated argument.

Ashwajit Gaikwad, a man accused of mowing down his 26-year-old girlfriend in Maharashtra's Thane, has refuted all the allegations made by the woman, Priya Singh, sources told India Today.

He also called the entire incident an attempt to "extort money", they added.

In the initial investigation, Gaikwad, who is the president of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Thane division, told the police that he and Priya were just "friends", the Indian news channel reported.

"Whatever has been portrayed is untrue. She (Priya Singh) is just a friend of mine," sources quoted him as saying by India Today.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday.

Police have registered a case against Gaikwad.

The woman wrote on Instagram: "Need Justice🙏🏻culprit ASHWAJIT ANIL KUMAR GAIKWAD. Son of Anil Kumar Gaikwad, joint MD, MSRDC. And his friend- Romil Patil.Driver- Sagar shedge these are the culprit."
