North East Grid Natural Gas Pipeline Project commences in Sikkim, governor expresses full Ssupport

Pakyong district in Sikkim, witnessed the ceremony for the North East Grid Natural Gas Pipeline Project took place on Friday. Organized by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), the ceremony marked a significant milestone in the project's progress and was attended by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

The ceremony commenced with a traditional bhumi pujan (ground-breaking ritual), accompanied by the symbolic welding of the pipeline. The North East Gas Grid Project, implemented by IGGL, a joint venture company of five Petroleum PSUs including IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, OIL, and NRL, aims to connect the state capitals, major cities, and demand centers of the eight North Eastern States, reported EastMojo.

With an estimated cost of Rs 9265 crore, the project will ensure a consistent supply of natural gas to the northeastern states by linking them to the National Gas Grid.

The pipeline in Sikkim, specifically the Siliguri-Gangtok section, will span a length of 197 km, with 47 km falling within the state. It will follow the route of NH 717A, ensuring efficient connectivity and accessibility.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in his address, expressed his wholehearted support and assured the cooperation of the Government of Sikkim for the successful implementation of the North East Grid Natural Gas (NEGG) Project. He highlighted the tremendous opportunities the project would bring, particularly in terms of accelerated industrial growth.

The Governor also emphasized the environmental benefits of natural gas as a clean fuel, highlighting its role in maintaining a cleaner environment with minimal carbon emissions. He stressed the significance of adopting clean energy sources to safeguard the well-being of future generations.

Furthermore, he stated that natural gas would contribute to the overall development and improved quality of life for the citizens of Sikkim, promoting rapid progress and prosperity.
