Patiala: A woman, who was allegedly consuming alcohol in a Gurdwara, was shot dead by a man, who has since been arrested, police said on Monday.

Patiala SSP Varun Sharma told the media that Parvider Kaur (40) was seen consuming alcohol near Sarovar in the Dukhnivarak Sahib Gurdwara at around 2130 hrs on Sunday.

Some devotees took her to the manager, where Nirmaljeet Singh, in the heat of the moment, fired five shots. Three bullets hit the woman and she died on the spot.

A Sevadar named Sagar also sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to Rajinder Hospital, where he is said to be out of danger.

Sharma said that Nirmaljeet Singh has been arrested and the weapon, a licensed revolver, has been recovered.

Replying to a question, he said that the accused had no link to the woman and he killed her in a heat of the moment, apparently, due to his hurt religious sentiments.

The SSP said that no one from the family of Parvinder Kaur has come forward so far adding that her address given on the Aadhaar card was of a PG, where she does not live anymore.

He said that during the investigation, the police have found that she had gone through a de-addiction program at Adarsh hospital, where doctors also said that she suffered from mood swings and depression.
