Visiting Czech Foreign Minister meets Tibetan govt-in-exile officials

New Delhi: Visiting Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, who held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday, also met officials of the Tibetan government in exile here.

In a tweet, the Czech Foreign Minister said:“During my visit to India, it was a pleasure to meet again the representatives of Tibetans in exile. The spirit of Václav Havel’s friendship with His Holiness Dalai Lama lives on.”

He was referring to the close friendship that existed between former Czech President Vaclav Havel and the Dalai Lama.

According to the Tibetan social media handle, the Czech foreign minister met Kalon Norzin Dolma of the Department of Information and International Relations-Central Tibetan Administration, Delhi.

The Czech Foreign Minister also spoke at the India-Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave here on Tuesday, during which he said that the Czech Republic and India plan to intensify cooperation in the education sector and that Czech companies are offering solutions in smart cities, waste to energy and clean technologies.

In tweets, he said: “Very happy to be asked to speak at the India – Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave @FollowCII. The topics of the forum mirror the priorities of the Czech government. I talked about science, research and innovation. Looking forward to more cooperation!"

“One of the sources of Czech pride and reputation in the world is the Czech education system and our universities. With India, we will intensify the cooperation between universities and research institutes, as well as scientific mobility.

“Czech companies are offering solutions in smart cities, waste to energy and clean technologies. We are offering our solutions and experience, including the preparation of legislation.”

EAM Jaishankar on his talks with his Czech counterpart held on Monday evening said the two sides discussed opportunities in business, defence, space and education.

“Our long-standing bilateral ties are expanding with regular contacts. Discussed opportunities in business, defence; space ; education; S&T and innovation domains,” EAM posted.

FM Lipavsky in a post said he was happy to meet EAM.

“I was happy to be reunited with my counterpart @DrSJaishankar. One and a half billion people live in India, it is the fifth largest economy in the world. The interest of the Czech Republic is to unlock this potential, and that is why I am here.”

He also met Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

“I continue my journey through India by meeting with the Minister of Industry and Trade @PiyushGoyal. People here know companies like Škoda, Tatra or Jawa, and we should be proud of that. Let's build on this and look for new ways to strengthen our economic cooperation."
