Ratan Tata's manager Shantanu Naidu weighs in on heated 18 hrs workday debate

Mumbai/IBNS: After a debate was sparked by Bombay Shaving Company's CEO Shantanu Deshpande's remarks that support an 18-hour work day for freshers, Shantanu Naidu, General Manager in the office of Ratan Tata, weighed in on the topic.

In a video post on Linkedin, Naidu firstly brought the issue of judging a person's worth solely based on accolades and work efficiency to the forefront.

He said, "I think the problem with this 18-hour work day or hustle culture is that it brings down the value of a person only down to his achievements and productivity and I think as human beings we are worth much more than that and work is something that we do -- not who we are -- is something I heard, and I really believe in that."

Disapproving Deshpande's message to the youngsters joining the workforce, he added that love and relationships are what makes us humans, and not the value we add during our working hours.

“People who still want to do the hustle and still want to do the eighteen-hour work days and not sleep are of course free to do that because they believe that’s the way to do it but to preach that to young impressionable minds is not a great idea because that’s not what makes us individuals and human beings,” the 28-year-old Founder of Goodfellows said.

“I think in the end it’s more relationships and love and what we leave behind for other people that really makes us human beings and not being valued at how much work I did today. I think that’s a problematic opinion maybe but I think that’s my opinion,” he added.

Deshpande received the flare for supporting what's deemed as toxic work culture which led to an apology and his post on Linkedin.

He said, "This is my last post on LinkedIn. Been a good ride...Thank you to so many friends who dropped me a message just to make sure I was okay. Means a lot. Genuinely.

"To those who sent nasty 'your son is a slave owner' messages to my parents and thousands like you - you won," the CEO of the grooming products enterprise said.
